Record Numbers of Travelers Fly Off for the Fourth

July 2, 2024 – Sweating it out at the airport with SwampButt Underwear. With temperatures at all-time highs, a record number of Americans are leaving town via air for this year’s fourth of July. In fact, AAA says that 5.74 million people will take to the skies this July 4th period. That’s up 6.8% from 2023, when 5.37 million people traveled by air. It’s also a 12.3% increase over the number of air passengers for the July 4th, 2019, period. How will higher temperatures potentially affect travelers? The people at SwampButt Underwear believe it will be quite negative.

Hot Weather Makes Us Cranky
According to the Internet, hot weather and high temperatures affect moods and behavior in several ways.

Some of these include: Physical discomfort. Sweating, working in the heat, and restricted movement can make people feel uncomfortable. “This perfectly describes the galley way, and the inside of the plane prior to takeoff, all during the flight and landing,” said one time agoraphobic and SwampButt Underwear spokesman Nick Heraldson.

Disrupted sleep: Heat can make it hard to sleep. Many people want to doze off when they get on the plane. And some even lay underneath the seats to catch a nap. “Word of advice, stay off the floor of airliners,” Heraldson cautioned. “There are outhouses in Alabama that are cleaner.”

Increased stress: Heat can raise cortisol levels and trigger a stress response. A fist fight on a plane because of limited overhead space, or someone wants to lean their seat back seems more likely this weekend. “To stay off those ‘fight websites’ or do a lot of explaining to members of law enforcement, just chill,” Heraldson suggested.

Serotonin changes: Heat can affect serotonin, the neurotransmitter that regulates mood, which can lead to decreased happiness and increased stress and fatigue. “Less serotonin is never a good thing,” Heraldson claimed. “Especially when someone who does not speak English is in your seat.”

Relief?
Someone will always suggest leaving early. And most of the rest of us know that will not happen. So, what should travelers expect at the airport. The TSA anticipates that it will screen more than 3 million individuals as the long holiday weekend starts. That would surpass the agency’s current record for most people screened on a single day, which reached just under 3 million the previous week. “We expect this summer to be our busiest ever,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, adding that travel typical peaks around Independence Day. “You can see that Pekoske is on top of his game,” Heraldson observed. “He is a great value and benefit to taxpayers.”

Flight Cancellations?
If your flight canceled, airlines are required to provide refunds for customers, even if the cancellation is due to weather. Delays are trickier because they typically must meet certain criteria for relief, such as refunds or compensation — but carriers will often give customers to chance to switch to alternative flights, if available, at no cost. “If you pull my other leg, it will play jingle bells,” winked Heraldson.

Department of Transportation
In April, the Biden administration issued final rules that include requiring airlines to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. Those rules are set to take effect over the next two years, but the Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the commitments each airline has made for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Always Check your Itinerary Before Leaving Home
It is better to be stuck at home than sit in hours-long traffic or stranded in an airport terminal. Before heading out the door this holiday week, do yourself a favor and check the status of your travel plans. “Or avoid the whole hassle and stay home,” Heraldson concluded.

Why Does An Underwear Company Care?
SwampButt Underwear is not just another men’s underwear company. It is underwear meant for times when the weather is hotter and the specter of a sweaty backside leaving butt-prints on public seating more embarrassing than normal. For those who sweat more than a regular person does, being in public is a challenge. “That’s why,” Heraldson concluded.
