SwampButt Scale of Sultry Picks Nine Week 8 Underdog Winners

SwampButt Underwear’s experimental Scale of Sultry weather-based model finishes 59–45 across 104 college football predictions…

LAKE JACKSON, Texas (October 26, 2026) — Can summer heat and humidity offer clues about college football outcomes? The SwampButt Underwear  Scale of Sultry correctly selected nine Week 8 FBS underdogs to win outright, including UCF’s 39–31 double-overtime victory over No. 2 BYU.

The model also selected ULM over Troy, Southern Miss over Louisiana, Illinois over Oregon and Wisconsin over USC. Its other successful underdog selections were Duke, Arizona State, Arkansas State and Colorado State.

UCF’s victory was its first over an Associated Press top-five opponent. The Scale of Sultry assigned UCF a 7.1 rating and BYU a 2.9 rating, selecting the Knights before kickoff.

Notable Correct Predictions

Among the other notable selections, ULM entered as a 13½-point underdog and earned its first victory of the season, beating Troy 21–14. Southern Miss, a 10-point underdog, defeated Louisiana 35–31. Illinois, a 9½-point underdog in the archived odds, beat Oregon 21–10. Spreads reflect archived pregame lines and may differ from closing odds.

Across 104 predictions recorded before kickoff, the modified Scale of Sultry finished 59–45, or 56.7%. That included a 26–23 record in FBS games and a 33–22 record in FCS games. Seven additional selections made after games were completed were excluded from the prediction record.

How the Scale Works

The modified model uses each school’s local high temperature and average relative humidity from Aug. 15, 2026, to calculate a heat-index-based score on a scale from 1 to 10, as recorded by the National Weather Service.  It selects the school with the higher score, without considering rankings, betting odds, injuries or previous results.

The experiment explores whether schools from hotter, more humid locations have an advantage over opponents from less sultry environments. The current version uses campus summer weather as a proxy for potential heat exposure; it does not incorporate actual game-day weather or directly measure player conditioning.

Small Differences Worth Noting

One noteworthy finding warrants further tracking: selections with at least a one-point difference between schools’ SOS ratings went 32–17, or 65.3%. Selections separated by less than one point went 27–28.

The results do not establish that heat or humidity caused the victories. The model selected 22 FBS underdogs, nine of which won. Selecting every betting favorite in the same 49-game FBS sample would have produced a 30–19 record, compared with SOS’s 26–23.

SwampButt Underwear developed the Scale of Sultry to encourage discussion about heat, humidity and comfort. Further research will examine whether game-day conditions help explain when differences in campus weather are most relevant.
