Free weather calculator estimates when heat, humidity and sunshine could turn an enjoyable day outdoors into peak swamp-butt territory…
LAKE JACKSON, Texas, Aug. 13, 2026 — Golfers check the wind before choosing a club. Tennis players consider the heat before taking the court. Campers study the forecast before packing their tents. Now, outdoor enthusiasts can also check the expected weather inside their pants. SwampButt Underwear has launched the Scale of Sultry 2.0, a free, mobile-friendly web app that estimates how temperature, relative humidity and exposure to sunshine may affect sweat, comfort and fabric-drying conditions during outdoor sports and recreation.
Whether someone is playing 18 holes, competing in a tennis match, hiking a trail, fishing, camping, coaching youth sports or spending the afternoon in the bleachers, the calculator provides a quick indication of whether conditions are likely to remain relatively comfortable—or deteriorate into a soggy, sweat-soaked situation.
The Scale of Sultry combines temperature, relative humidity and sun exposure to produce a Sultry Score ranked from 1 to 10. A score of 1 represents relatively comfortable conditions. A 10 means the weather has reached peak swamp-butt territory.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF SPORTS WEATHER REPORT
“Outdoor athletes already check temperature, rain, wind and lightning before heading out,” said SwampButt Underwear corporate spokesman and champion indoor spectator, Nick Heraldson. “The Scale of Sultry adds the question everyone should be asking: What will all of that weather mean inside my pants?”
Conditions can vary considerably depending on the activity. A golfer walking an exposed fairway may experience more direct solar heat than someone resting beneath a campsite canopy. A tennis player competing on a sunbaked hard court may face a different level of heat and moisture than a spectator sitting in shaded bleachers.
The Scale of Sultry allows users to account for those differences by selecting a level of sun exposure ranging from full shade or nighttime conditions to blazing sunshine.
After entering the current temperature and relative humidity, users select the appropriate sun-exposure level. The calculator immediately provides a ‘Sultry Score’ and a plain-language description of the conditions they can expect.
“For golfers, it could help explain why the back nine feels a lot wetter than the front nine,” Heraldson said. “For tennis players, campers, hikers and everyone else outdoors, it offers a warning that conditions may be getting unpleasant below the belt.”
FABRIC PERFORMANCE UNDER OUTDOOR CONDITIONS
The updated calculator also compares the estimated drying performance of the Lycra-spandex fabric used in SwampButt Underwear with that of traditional cotton underwear.
The calculation considers apparent heat, atmospheric moisture, drying potential and the additional heat burden created by direct sunlight. Cotton tends to absorb and retain moisture, while the fabric used in SwampButt Underwear is designed to dry more quickly and reduce the appearance of visible butt sweat.
“The outdoor-sports world measures nearly everything—distance, speed, heart rate, wind, temperature and even the break of a putting green,” Heraldson said. “We thought it was time someone measured the likelihood of swamp butt.”
According to the company, the Scale of Sultry is the first web-based calculator to combine weather conditions, solar exposure and the estimated evaporative performance of different underwear fabrics in a single consumer tool.
ONE-TAP ACCESS FROM A PHONE OR TABLET
The Scale of Sultry can be opened in any modern web browser and used immediately. No account, purchase or installation is required.
Users who want faster access at the golf course, tennis court, campground or playing field can add the web app to the Home Screen of a phone or tablet. This creates a one-tap icon that opens the calculator much like a conventional mobile app.
“The Scale of Sultry is a web app rather than an application distributed through the Apple App Store or Google Play,” Heraldson said. “The site includes separate, step-by-step instructions for adding it to an iPhone, iPad or Android device. It is pretty easy to do.” When asked whether he had added the app to his own iPhone, Heraldson replied, “No, but it’s on my to-do list.”
iPhone and iPad users can open the setup page in Safari and use the browser’s “Add to Home Screen” function. Android users can complete the process through Chrome by selecting “Install app” or “Add to Home screen,” depending on the device and browser version.
FROM COLLEGE FOOTBALL TO THE GREAT OUTDOORS
The Scale of Sultry originated as a way to compare weather conditions at college football stadiums and consider whether teams accustomed to hotter, more humid climates might be better prepared for oppressive game-day weather.
Version 2.0 expands the concept by incorporating sun exposure and applying the calculation to golf, tennis, baseball, softball, camping, hiking, fishing, running, cycling, outdoor work, travel and other activities conducted in heat and humidity.
“The goal was to create an easy tool people can check before they step onto the course, court, trail or campground,” Heraldson said. “A weather forecast can tell you it will be hot and humid. The Scale of Sultry tells you how miserable your underwear may become.”
